We (Herald) are informed by Mr C. A. Harris, who has returned to town from Cororaandel. that the damage caused by the fire on Friday ni«bt to his upper sawmill, at Whangapoua, will exceed £4000, and that the policy of insurance in the Royal covers only £1350. The fire was discovered simultaneously at three different places, viz., by persons at the booms, the lower mill, and Mr Harris, iun's, house about 11.30 p.m. Mr Harris jun., states that he had retired to rest, and chancing to glance toward the window he noticed an unusual reflection of light, and, on getting up, at once saw that the mill in the distance was in a blaze. He rushed away to the mill, rousing the men on his way; and, with tho assistance of others who had arrived previously, endeavored to preserve from fire some stacks of timber lying near the mill, all efforts for the purpose of saving the building itself being quite hopeless. The cause of the conflagration is. not known, but there is no reason for supposing it to have been other than accidental. The milt which has been destroyed hnd been idle for tho past two year.?. Fires had occasionally been placed under the boilers to prevent them from becoming mildewed, and on the evening of the 21st inst. such firrs had been burning.
