We are given to understand that Mr R. C. Long has been again hindered from completing his surveys on Mr H. Alloy's estate at Hikutaia by Te Amo Paetai, the brother of Tamati Paetai, who so lately figured in the II.M. Court here for a similar offence. It appears that on yesterday morning this native with another came upon.Mr Long and took the chain out of his hand, signifying that the surreying must be stopped. Mr Long slopped work and the chain was given back. We dp not know what steps the parties interested will take in the matter.
We are informed that the sole cause of the postponement of the sale of the Big Pump was the inability of the County authorities to ascertain the exact boundaries of the allotment on which the Pump and gear stands. Enquiries are now being made, and it is expected the required information will be to Hand in time for the next monthly meeting of the Council.
We bear that the Committee appointed at last meeting of the County Council, on (-r Carpenter's motion, for the devising of means to curtail the expenditure, will report at the next meeting. Their report will recommend, besides the reduction of the Chairman's salary, several other savings in tha administrative expeuces of the Council under several heads including a reduction of the salaries of the County Clerk and Chairman. The committee will also recommend that no travelling expences be allowed, except those expressly sanctioned by the Council.
An impertinent southern contemporary wants to know " If by the Thames harbor and dock* it is meant the mud fkt3 in front of the city, nnd the vegetation that lines the principal street in Shortland ? " No, certainly not. The Thames harbor and docks are yet deep in the womb of the future. f Mr McCullough left Wellington by the Rotorna at noon yesterday, and may be expected here about the end of the week.
The annual cricket match between the Coromandel and Thames toams, will be played on Monday, Ist December, at JParawai Gardens. .The Coromandel team has been strengthened by the addition of some new players, and it will require the best efforts of our local team to score a victory on this occasion. Probably a team from the Union Club will try conclusions with the visitors on the following day.
Ok Monday night, Mr H. A coBBESroNDENT sends us the following " widdle." We do not. see the joke, hut perhaps some of our readers will be less obtuse:—" Why is Edwards, the paint manufacturer, like Mr James Mackay ?—Because they both mako Hematite (Emma li^lit)."
We aro pleased to learn that the gentlemen canvassing for subscriptions for the Thames Annual llaces are meeting with great success. Already some £60 or £70 lins been subscribed, and with the pate money and sale of privileges, the full amount required should bo easily raised. Tho grandstand now in. course of erection will be finished next week. It will be a substantial building, 40 fcefc in. length, and commanding a good view of tho course. Before the meeting tho course will be put in proper condition, and we aro sure neither the public nor llio owners of hor&es will huve anything lo uouiplniu of.
