In the case Lingard v. Gillon to rccorer £10, paid in 1877 under protest, as dramatic author's fee, tho Magistrate held .that defendant failod to establish any | claim to collect these fees, and that in threatening to stop Lingard from going to America undue advantage was taken, as it had not been .shown that there existed any agreement between Coppin tud Lingard. For these and other reasons Magisteale hold plaintiff entitled to recover the money paid.
Mr FiUherbei t, on behalf of Mr Gillon, asked leave ■to appeal. The Magistrate said " Yes, on payment of the money into Cotift, and entering into the usual bonds." Jas. Smith, leading draper and clothier, contested with tho Corporation his right to hang articles for sale outside h\» shop window. The Magistrate considered such practices should be discouraged, as it was a breach ol" tho law. Fined 203 and
costs. At the inquest on the bodies of the Miller family Mr Fiance gave evidence, and said ho knew Clarence since ho wus an infant, and he always had a tendency towards insanity. A verdict " That Mr and Mrs Miller were killed by their son Clarence while insane " was returned.
Only two candidates for the Mayoralty at present. There are Mayor Hutchison and Councillor Allen.
