Ministers and members of the Government party again got it warm about the telegrams, as Mr Sheehan found a paid one of his among the lot. The feeling on both sides is that the Government made a mistake, and one likely to affect them presently.
It is said the i-eason the Government represents the financial position to be so bad is, that if allowed to retain power and they succeed in restoring prosperity, they can take credit for it. On the other hand they can assert, like the Dutchman, " Did'nt we told you so."
The report of the Select Committe of the Council in re lailway contracts gives against the late Government. It may furnish grouud for discontinuing the Thames line.
Nothing definite is known, as all public works are dependent on the Treasurer's statement. The £6CD,OCO Deficiency Bill is already spent, and after making provision for ordinary expenditure it 13 said the Government have only £2C0,000. If the loan is not floated, of which there is Bo prospect now, even advances cannot be obtained against it.
