The Melbourne Cup.
The following description of the Melbourne Cap race is abridged from papers which arrived by the Arawata at the Bluff on Tuesday:—The following bones started for the Cup—Darriwell (1), Sweetmeat (2), Suwarrow (3), Richmond, Savanaka, Le Loup, Lord Harry, Democrat, Wellington, Sirathearn, Tom Kirk, Leraut, Columbus, Glenormiston, Monarque, X.C.8., Colima, Waxy, Tidal Wave, Falmouth, Hirer ton, Secundus.Eoland, Terrific, Caractacus, Wandering Jew Pollio. After a good start, with a pretty field, Suwarrow was first seen in front, and wtnt »w»y at ■ great pice, with Bim>
ton, Savanaka, Tom Kirk, Waxy, and Gicnormistou in the order mimed, with Colima, Democrat, Wellington, Monarquc and Columbus lying well in the centre Suwarrow kept the lead ail along tho back of the course, but under the hill Darriwcll's colours wore seen for the first time drawing to the front, Sweetmeat running well forward, and iiiverton and Colima"- also well up. Suwarrow led into the straight; nud half-way up Darriwell came on the outside and passed Suwarrow, who was under the whip. 'Sweetmeat camo up at the satno time, and secured second place. .Darriwell won a splendid race by a length from Sweetmeat, Suwarrow third, Columbus fourth, Wellington fifth. Then came Colima aud Wary. Saranaka was nowhere. Time, Smins. 30ffsecs. The Cup-winner is 5 years o!d, a brown horse. Darriwell is the last horse whose appearance suggests a Cup-winner. His name was scarcely mentioned in the betting. His stable only backed him slightly. Suwarrow the Derby-winner, is a beautiful small dark grey horse by Snowden. Some t'me ago in Melbourne a Volunteer dreamt Suwarrow would win the Derby and Darriwell tho Cup, and mentioned his dream publicly several days before tho races.
