November G. Two men attempted to stick up the Bank of Australia at Moo, Gippsland. Tho manager successfully resisted, and grappled with his assailants, one of whom fired a shot from a revolver, but being afraid of the noise bringing assistance, decamped, the bush police pursuing. Both wore masks, and were apparently young men. Small, the Government diver at Belfast, nearly lost his life through being seized by an octopus. He was repeating his efforts to dislodgo a rock when his left hand got clutched in a hole by the marine monster, and he wag unable to roach his life line, but eventually got hold of an iron bar with one of his feet. On account of the peculiar position he could only deal blows overhanded with the other arm into the hole, during which time the octopus had increased its grip. It was twenty minutes before Small could release himself in a very exhausted condition. Ho had great difficulty in keeping his feet down, as air was pumped through the interior of the dress and inflated it, and
if his feet hud got uppermost, he would soon have become insensible. Even if he have reached the life Hup, it would resulted in the arm being broken or pulled cut. The hand was sucked terribly. He described the agon}* as dreadful from the arms of the octopus pulling. The remains of the octopus measured eight feet across. The affair occurred in the river Moyne. The following thirteen cricketers were seleoted for the Intercolonial Match against New South Wales: —Allan, Alexander, Blackburn, Boyle, Campbell, Cooper, Healey, Horan, Mullogh, MacDonald, Palmer, Slight, and Tennant.
