PURGING THE "DEVIL."

It seems that the gentlemen of the Fourth Estate in Christchurch are about to be experimented upon by a section of the clergy. A meeting of evangelical ministers took place there lately when it was unanimously resolved that —This meeting considers the time has arrived when serious steps should be taken in '■ order to bring persons connected with the newspaper profession in Christchurch to a sense of the duties which they owe to their fellow-citizens in a moral and religious sense ; and that a society for the conversion of journalists be formed in order that many wayward souls may be gathered in the kingdom. There were fifteen clergymen present and a wellknown divine occupied the chair. The reasons assigned by the promoters of this movement for their singular action in this matter are, according to their own showing very cogent ones. Jn the first place they state that they ,have good authority for asserting that the journalists of Christchurch are for the most part scoffers, mockers, and wine-bibbers, and in support of this assertion they point to a convivial club there, known as the Christchurch Mutual Imps. These jolly do«B, it seems, hold their bacchanalian festivals on the Sabbath eveniugs, to the wonder of their goodly neighbours. The millenium is evidently at hand.—Exchange. ..
