On the race course this morning Natal and Nalator went twice round at threequarter speed. Grand Duchess and Billingsgate had a good gallop, and Betrayer and Adamant hsul a spin twice round, finishing moderately fast. Ternpleton had Ilia best gallop of the morning ; the first time round in the company of Maritana, and finishing home with Titania. The old horse went in grmsd style, and i 3 thought by many good enough to win the Handicap. In answer to Mr Stevens' telegram, tho Chamber of Uomiuerce has determined ou tba following resoluliou:-—" The
Chamber are of opinion that relief may be uHorded to local industries by the remission of duties on articled imported and u';t.(! for TDiir-ufacliiriiij.; purposes." The muter .said it was thought thai: Government would say ihfy could not see {.licit* way to this. Ho would then propose tin; following should bo agreed as an addition to the above motion— "and the loss to revenue, which may be incurred by such remission, could be recouped by additional luxation on tho following urlielea: spirits, wine, tea, bottled beer, cigars, and sngar, the articles to ha selected in the order as slated." The sub committee appointed to bring up the report on tho question held four meetings, but they were by no means unanimous, and could not agree on a comprehensive report, and tho Chamber deemed it best to confine themselves to a general resolution like the above.
135 passes have been issued up to tho present by the Public Works Department. Weka Pass and Albury extensions are sullicieutly supplied with men for the present, but passes are still issued to those desirous of going to any part of the country to look for work. Mr March, who took a carpenter with him South yesterday, telegraphed that the man obtained work at Ashburton, and he thought tradesmen could find employment if they came in that direction. A number of men who obtained passes have already left town. Sailed : Kotomahana, for Wellington.
A man named Williams was charged with having smuggled tobacco in his possession, and was fined £10 at Lyttelton, or imprisonment until paid. Saturday night.
Racing Matters. Little John was omitted from the acceptances for the Spring Steeplechase in yesterday's list. Chancellor was out this morning on the course for the first timo for some d«ya. He went once round, being better towards the finish. Templeton, Hornby, and Titania did a «ood gallop of a mile and n-half. The Princess colt Hilarious showed a good deal of speed in a galiop with Pinfire and Lara Finn.
