THE GOAT AN' THE LOOKIN'-
GLASS. (a wabnin* to a' thb \tosien folk.)
Oor liooso was weol Btockit, when Bell an* me yockit, To draw baith thegither, throo thick an* throo thin; But ao thing wo wanted, an' for it Bell ranted, Till I was for quid sake obleeged to gio in. I turned oot the siller, an' handed it till her, An 1 sune a braw lookin'-glass decked the drawer's-heid; An' while she waa sittin', the cttwhy.wark knittin', To hing on't, I swore 'twas a wastm'o r threid. But I wasna' heeded, an' Bhe said, 'twas needed To matf it the same as a* bodies had theirs: " Her man was demented, an' ehe was tor. mented, The way that he meddled her 'woman* affairs.'" But hand ye a weeocSr; a dainiy bit spreeock Took place no lang after the glass was made nato; • Oor Bella had been giein' the. drawer's-heid, a freein' Frae Btoor, an' had set the glass doon oot her gate. When a billy-goat ontered; an' forrit it rontnred, ' ■ An* saw in the glass—Lod! a beiat liko itsel'l . , : An' eyne took a rainrace, an' wasted the shamfacc, An' kind neobours 'ministered "water" to Bell."
