Last night. A. woman with a baby in her arms, apparently of respectable character, was sentenced to 7 days' imprisonment to-day for stealing an album. She admitted, the charge, and said she had been tempted to steal it through want of food. Inspector Hickson said she had applied for charitable aid. Edgar Osborne, a young man, son of a well-known resident, was charged at the Kesident Magistrate's Court with setting fire to Hales' store a few days ago. The evidence, so far went to show that Osborne had been near the place about the time of the fire, and afterwards showing traces of tar, and with his dress in a disordered con* ditioa. .The .case was adjourned after the Court had sat till past 5 o'clock. It is a carious thing that among the undoubted cases of fire raising there is one of which an upholsterer's place was destroyed, and another in which a determined attempt was made; to burn down a similar establishment, Osborne's father being in the.same trade. Osborne was known to the police as a reckless young man, and it was not long ago that he got into trouble in a night brawl. The business in the grain market during the last week has been Tory quiet, and transactions have neither been numerous nor of great magnitude. The weather continues most favorable for growing grain. Wheat remains at 5s lOd to os. M illers are the principle buyers. Barley: Unaltered. Potatoes: Market was rather bare at the beginning of the week, and prices touched £6, but towards the end of the week a few lots came forward, and rates receded to £5 and £5 10s. Flour: Quotations remain at £12 to £13. Dairy produce is in good supply; prices range aboat 7d to Bd. Cheese: sxd5 xd to 6d. flams and bacon, 9id tolOd. The following are the acceptances for the Free Handicap :—Longlaada, Laertes, Foul Play, Marie Antoinette, Bobin Hood, Sinking Fund, El6n King, Hibernian, Billingsgate, Edward James, Titania, York, and Chancellor. Spring Steeplechase—Te Whetu and Lonehand. A fire broke out last night at the back of the premises of the Gas Company's Offices, Gloucester street. The fire had just begun to get hold of the wood work when it was discovered by Sergeant Barlow. Tery little damage was done. Nothing is known as to its origin. Bather slow work was done on tho racecourse this morning. Chancellor has not been out this morning. He ii believed to be a little off.
