Tlio proceedings in the Council to-day lasted only an hour and a quarter, and were of lillie interest.

SUPREME COURT PROCEDURE

After the formal business tho AttorneyGenenil, replyiug to Mr P. A. Buckley, said Government had no intention this session to introduce a measure dealing with Supreme Court procedure. The judges themselTes had the maf-er in hand, and already proceeded some way in the direction of reform especially connected with expenses. THE MAOBI PRISONERS. Mr P. A. Buckley also raised a question as to the legality of detaining the Maori prisoners, and asked when their trial would take place. Mr Whitaker said they wcro imprisoned quite legally, and would be tried at tbe next term of the Supreme Court. Their trial had been merely deferred at their Counsel's wish. EAIIAVAY. Col. Whitmore asked if a contract had been lot for the first section of the Wel-lington-West Coast railway, and if so, whether tho contract was binding. Mr Whitaker replied that no contract had been let. IJIT.LS PASSED. The following Bills, after going through Committee, were road a third time and passed :—Tho Gambling, and Lotteries Prevention Bill; the Intercolonial Probate Act Amendment; the Leases and Sales of Settled Land Act Amendment Bill.

The Council adjourned at ten minutes to four.
