Information was received in town yesterday afternoon that .Mr R. U. Long, surveyor, and a party had bren stopped in: surveying a piece of Mr Alley's land at Hikutaia by a party of 15 armed natives headed by a native assessor named Tftinnta Pattai. Wo cannot understand the motive o! the ucliou of the natives, as Mr Long was on the uinin road, and the land over which they appear to wishio assert a claim was Crown granted to A. McC'askell and L. ~A. McCaskell some 30 or 40 years ago. When ordering Mr Long ami party off tho leader expressed his determination that if 60 men were brought to do the survey he would kill them.
