To-day the great roeing event of the Australasian Colonies—viz,, the Melbourne Cup, is run. Interest is felt in this event by the whole British community of the Southern Hemisphere and in every small villngo aud hamlet in the colonies for soqio weeks past the event has been ono of the current topics of conversation, possess ng an almost absorbing interest as the day of the race approaches. The Thames is not behind other places, and one way and another a good deal of money is laid on the event. The result wiil probably be known here this evening at about sis or sereu o'clock.
