Last night.
A fire broke out at Porter and Go's, largo ironmongery warehouses, Queen street, at 9 o'clock. Dense masses of smoko were pouring out at the roof aud wirjdbwH of the packing rooms, where there were a number of crates and straw. The accountants and clerks were in the counting-house working'at books at the time, wnen they smelt fire, and gave the alarm. The Auckland and Newton Fire Brigades were soon at work, but owing to the dense smoke had great difficulty in working, even with respirators. Several of the brigade men. and one of Messrs Porter and Go's, clerks, weve carried out half suffocated. The tire, though confined to a cellar and smouldering, was not subdued for over an hour. The damage will not be g>eat, and principally through the water. The premises are covered by iriH'inmce. Tho stock amounted to £-20,000.

A perfect skeleton was found in the Band iii Manakau Heads near the-scene of tho wreck of H.M.S. Orphans. From tho .Naval blue cloth, the gilt buttons, and gold lace, it is believed to be the remains of one of ill-fated officers of tho vessel. The House of Sir Robinson of Gambidge was ntruck by lightening, splitting the studs, and starting the weatherboards aud lining. A man named Alipk was inside but escaped uninjured.
Yaughan, of tho Weat Coa^t, arrived by tho Waitaki to contest the mile raco with O'Connor. The terms are uot yet settled. &2.QQ has been subscribed already to back O'Connor.
