Last night.
Mr Neil Ferguson, for many years in the Eegisfration of Deeds Pepartment, and one of the first settlers, died yesterday. The deceased was a member of the Caledonian Society, and the success of the annual gatherings was due to his exertions. He was aiso well known in Volunteer circles, baring only recently resigned Lieutenancy of the C Battery New Zealand Artillery. He will receive a military funeral on Sunday. A set of Rogaes.
Wheddon, McKay, and Cameron, charged with arson at Mataura, were further remanded for 8 days. In the Police Court to-day in the course of examination of the prisoners 3 letters were read from Cameron to Wheddqn in which the. writer advised in order to make sure of burning the place to take a bottle of kerosene oil. Experiments were made last night with tbe fire escape invented by R. Morris, when the result was very satisfactory.
