MINING REVIEW OF THE WEEK.
During the week the event to which we referred to in last week's article has been consummated. The foes of the gold duty hare struck another deadly blow at it by carrying in the House a resolution reducing it sixpence. It is evident the tax is fated, and a year or two more will see this important item of the revenue of local bodies a thing of the past. Although, we have all through strenuously advo> cated the abolition of the gold duty as an unfair impost, the way it has been done does not meet with pur entire approbation. The Legislature have decided to diminish the revenue of the local bodies without providing some other source of income to ' meet the deficit; and again we think that the'peopie who raise the gold should have the vetoing or voting for the continuance of the tax. If the people wished the abolition of the gold duty, as Mr Sheehan recently said, they could easily do so by ' electing as members of their local governing bodies, men pledged to see their : wishes carried out in this respect. ■" ' ~ During the best part of the week operations have been suspended in the Caledonian mine in consequence of the rise of gas, generated by the recent warm weather. There is nothing in connection with any of the other large mines, with the exception of an improvement in the Alburnia, which is referred to below.
