It is understood fbat Joseph Saunders, of Wellington, is tho successful tenderer for the Thorndon reclamation , and the first section of the West Coast railway. The amount is £75,000. A tender from another part of the colony was very close to that amount. One of GoTemment's conditions is finding work for the unemployed. Saundera undertakes to find work for all the unemployed within a fortnight.
The Chamber of Commerce on Hutchinson's Bill.
Progress with the Catlo Alterations,
The Chamber of Commerce has passed a resolution to the effect that as under the present l»w imprisonment for debt is 'abolished, except in cases where the debtor can but will not pay, Hutchinson'a Bill is wholly unnecessary. Copies of the resolution was tent to the mem. j bers for Wellington. It is reported to-day that the New I Zealand Times has changed hands yes- | terday.
The Agnes yesterday underran and examined over two miles •of the cable. She is now engaged. picking up, and examining the last piece from Lyell Bay. The weather is very fuvorablo, and should it continue fine • a little longer, it ii fully anticipated that the cable will be in working order again by Monday next.
