Evening Sitting.

The Home reassembled at 7.30. Mr J. T. Fisher tnored the second reading of the Heathcote Bridges Bill, which was carried GOLD DUTY. In the adjourned debate on the question that the gold duty be reduced la per ounce Mr Keid argued that without the retention of the duty it would be impossible to provide for the efficient admiuiatration of local public works. He would support a reduction of 6d per ounce. - As the best solution of iho question Mr Sheehan sugs;eited that as it was local revenue a bill should be passed authorising local bodies to abolish the duty at might seem fit. Mr DeLautour did not think the permissive provision would be fair to all parts of the colony. Ho thought a gradual reduction of 6d per ounce was the fairest solution of the question. :- Mr Seddon hoped they would affirm the principle and carry the motion. Mr Pyke moved as an amendment that | the reduction be 6d per ounce. ' The question was then put thnt the amount be sixpence and the House divided, 39 voting for ayea, and 18 for noes.
