THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1879.

The Oppoiition are paying the penalty for their want of tact, and their ungenerous conduct to their late leader. In tho House on Tuesday night, Mr Macandrew withdrew!the no-confidence motion, and admitted he did so because he knew the Gorernment now had the majority that he had when he placed it on the Order paper. The simple rule, the good old plan, " Let him take who has the power, and keep who can," is without doubt the motto of our legislators. "AH is fair in politics," is admitted to be the principle to be followed, and the Gorernment, who, by promises to a native member, succeeded in obtaining office, hare now, through further promises to some Auckland members completely broken up the strong opposition arrayed against them. We cannot say that one party is a whit better than the other, or influenced by principles of morality of a higher degree, for within the last few weeks we hare had ample evidences from members of both lidei of the House of a total want

of consistency, an utter disregard for \iiQ cluime of honor, arid a display of feeling alike unworthy of the exahed position held in the speakers, and discourteous to the constituencies they represent. The present advantageous position of the Government will, however, give them an opportunity to carry the Liberal measures, and although they are not the authors of the measures, still they will deserve credit for so readily grasping the requirements of the country, and carrying out the views of the Ministry they replaced. We believe in party Government, and although both sides of the House have agreed on certain measures, such a state gf things cannot we believe long continue. We shall be pleased to see the present Minister of Public Works following in the steps of his predecessor, and pushing on with vigor the Thames and Waikato railway, and the construction of main roads and bridges through the County of Thames.
