OPENING OF THE THAMES ORPHANAGE.
The formal opening of this institution took place this afternoon. From noon till two o'clock cabs aud 'busses were in great request to convey the visitors to the Home, and at 2.30, the hour appointed for the opening-there were fully 500 ladies aud gentlemen ou the grounds. Tiie arrangements for crossing the river were bad, and this occasioned some delay. All present expressed gratification at the arrangements made for the reception of the children, who were cleanly dressed and appear happy and in good health. Tea and coffee, with cakes and sandwiches, were offered lo the visitors. The Major at three o'clock declared the Orphanage open, and in a few remarks pointed out the advantages that were anticipated from having such an institution on the Thames.
Mr Robert Graham and Dr Kilgour addressed those present.
