As you are aware that Prince of Commissioners, Mr James Mnckay, is amongst us, for the purpose of bringing the law-bmakers of the Ngatihako to justice. Nothing but force of arms will bring them in, of tfcat we are quite certain ; however, the termination of tho difficulty will be hailed witli satisfaction by all, ai capital will not find its way here until there is complete security for life and property. • To-day was a gala day for a number ot the No. 3 Scottish and friends, firing took place at the butts for a set of three prizes:—lst. a saddle given by Mr -Kobson ; 2nd, a pair of boot*, given by Mr Bramley; 3rd, a pair of pictures, giren by Mr Morgan, Shortland Bazaar. Lieut. Grant, our deservedly respected Drill Instructor, by invitation, took charge of the party, and gave the utmost satisfaction in taking the scores. Mr A. Moore won the first prize with a score of 67 points out of a possible B<t. Mr Littlejilm second with 64 points, Mr F. Cock third with 62 points. Want of time forbids my sending the other scores. Luncheon was provided on the ground by thu donors of the prizes. The steamer Te Aroha arrived at the conclusion of the match, having on board Mrs Murray, who came by special invitation to present the prizes. At 4 p.m. the firing party, and a great number of friends from Shortland and the surroundinji district, assembled in the large dining room of the Criterion Hotel. Amongst those present were — Messrs James Mackny (jiin.), H. Mcllhone, P. Strange, S. Turtle, A. Porleir, Capt. Dalton, Lieut. Grant, Phillips (2), Corbet!; (2), Nieholli, and others. The ladies having arrived, P. Austin, Esq., J.P., was called to. the chair, and in a befitting speech, requested Mm
Murrny lo present the. prizes. The good lady of our much respected Major, acknowlodged the pleasure it gave Let 1 to be present on such an interesting occasion, and in handing the prizes complimented the winners, and trusted they would continue <o be an honor to the company. The recipients returned thanks, and acknowledged that the value of the prizes was considerably enhanced by being received from the fair lady's hands. After'Mr James Mackay had suitably addressed the company, three cheers were called for Major and Mrs Murray, and given right heartily, with one more Mrs Murray. After an apology had been received from Major Murray for his unavoidable absence, three cheers were given for Messrs Austin, Mack&y, Lieut. Grant, scd the donors of the prizes, all of which were duly acknowledged. The ladies having retired.' proceeding were brought to a close by those present drinking success to volunteering in Ohinemuri, and other complimentary toasts, the whole making a very agreeable day's enjoyment.
