Fatal Accident.

Information was received in town this afternoon of a fatal accident which occurred about noon at Tararu Creek—a foreigner named Charles Petersen being the victim. It appears that deceased and his mate, a young man named Fisher, both employes of Mr Casey, had just completed falling a tree which in coming down splintered the branch of an adjoining monarch of the forest. This was not noticed by Petersen or his companion, and the former, probably wearied by'the exertion of cutting the tree, sat down. Fisher, who was standing up, was suddenly startled by a loud crack over head, aud giving a rapid glance upward, saw the broken brauch in the act of falling. He had just time to give a warning short, and jump aside, when the branch landed witli a sickening thud across the body of the unfortunate Petersen. Fisher endeavored to lift the bough, but finding it beyond his strength, summoned some other bushuien and with their aid it was moved. The poor fellow continued to breathe for half an hour after the accident. The body was brought down by Fisher, Short, and others, and placed in the Soyal Hotel, Tararu, where doubtless an inquest will be held to-morrow.
