AUCKLAND.

This day.

Captain Carey who died aboard the Eotomahana, is not Carey of the Rotorua, but was well known as master of the Star of the South while trading in Fijian waters, and then in the brigantine Ethel and barque Glencoe. Ha left the latter vessel to take charge of a Victorian barque trading to India, and had made but one trip when he came on to Auckland by steamer to visit his family before going to sea again. When he left here a week ago by the Eotomahana to join his ship, he was apparently in good health, but on Friday he succumbed to an attack of heart disease. Captain Carey leaves behind him a widow and two children.

A steamer, supposed to be the mail, is signalled.
