THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1879.

FflOM our Parliamentary it will be seen that Sir George Grey has in reality accepted the position of an independent member, in fact a free lance, a guerrilla, and as such has gone for the Premier and his Ministry, and in rouad set terms has spoken of the position taken by His Excellency, Sir Hercules Eobinson. We regret that a gentleman occupying the exalted position of Governor of an important colony like New Zealand should have laid himself open to have such remarks made about him, and while we are sorry that the circumstances of the case called for the rebuke of such, a man as Sir George Grey, an ex* Governor of vast experience, we must admit the Governor ii the most to blame under the circumstances. Few men should know what is due to the representative^? Her Majesty better than Sir George Grey, and we believe none would be more ready to render respect to the person occupying such an exalted position than that gentleman; still the late Premier, in pursuance of his line of policy and in view of the magnitude of the interests at stake, and his duty as a representative of a large constituency, has evidently been driven, no matter with what violence to his feelings, to characterise the conduct of the Governor of the colony as he has done. It seems au accepted fact that Sir Hercules Robinson has shown & partiality for the present; Government, even the action taken by His private secretary in writing disparagingly of Sir G. Grey, referred to by us a few days ago, supports tho assumption of partisanship, so that under the circumstances, and for party purposes, the late Premier may be justified in referring to the position taken up by His Excellency.
