A PEBUsAi of the debate in the . House last night will not impress those taking the trouble to wade through it with a very high opinion of the patriotism of the representatives of the people, or an exalted one of their personal abilities. The Government of the day are using the same stereotyped arguments which were used by their predecessors, and against which they contended for days; and the present Opposition are following their example and using the same expedients to supplant that were used against themselves while occupying the Government benches. What was fair from an Opposition point of view the present Government think is quite the contrary now that it is applied to themselves, and so it will be while the present unsatisfactory situation of parties exist. We shall be pleased to see an end made to this unseemly scramble for office, and the declared wish of all parties to proceed with the business of the country carried into effect.

To-day the Eev. Charles MeyseyThompson, the Governor's Private Secretary, has a long letter in the New Zealand Times against Sir George Grey, and defending Mr Disraeli's remarks about the blessing conferred on Ireland by the great famine. In the course of his remarks Mr Thompson blames the Grey Government for the native difficulty. The letter is evidently written to influence the public opinion abroad and contains many insidious attacks on Sir George Grey.
In the House last night both Mr WaJrefield and Mr .liolleston, two very great guns, sat on the ''excited young member of Auckland City East," to wit, Mr W. J. Speight. We can easily imagine the surcastical sang jroid with which that talented scion of the haughty race of Wakefields would refer to the apparently insignificant Thames enginedriver, and the pomposity of old Kolleston when he dubbed Speight the •f talking member." Mr Speisjht appears to hare been quiet under the lash, but we are very much mistaken in the inanif he is afraid of a dozen WakeKelds backed by a gross of Ilollestons, and we very soon expect to see " the excited young member " launching out in a manner tiiat will surprise those gentlemen who so patronisingly rebuked him in the House last : night. j Tenders will be received tip to 12 o'clock on Monday nest for the taking j out the pump main rod and all connec- > tions in the Piako shaft. At the firing competition of the Naval Cadets yesterday morning for the handsome blue velvet smoking cap presented by Mrs Gordon, Cadet Otter made a score ofi 33 out a possible 40, winning the prize.
