William Mathiesoa, for robbing a lodger at Barrett's Hotel, was sentenced to 18 mouths' on two charges; the jury were five hours locked up over his case. The missing fishermen has been found near the heads; there is no longer any doubt about the men being drowned.. Quartz m 'Wellington Province. Tests at the Laboratory. Mr Cox, Government geologist, has forwarded to the Colonial Secretary a report regarding the Wairarapa auriferous reef. The principal points of this report are the abundance of quartz in the locality, there being several outcrops of quartz, though no gold waa visible in any of the specimens. A couple of samples of stone were taken from the centre and ono side of the reef, care being taken to provide against fraud in the shape of " salting " or " prepared specimens.'' The result of the assay at tho laboratory was one sample yielded at the rate of 14dirts 1 grain to the ton, the other > 12dwts 11 grain. The quartz is rubbley and not j difficult to work. Quartz taken from other reefs in the neighborhood was also tested, and one sample gave at the rate of four dwts to the ton. The gold is so fine in the stone that it can't be detected even with the magnifying glass. The prospectors not having means to erect
machinery it is suggested that the Government advance) £5000 for that pur pose, and in the event of it turning out well £5000 of it shall bo paid for the discovery of the payable gold (kid.
