WELLINGTON.

Press Statements.

Thin day.

The New Zealander sayi: "Mr Hall will bring in a Bill providing for the appointment of two Under-Secretaries, one in each chamber, at a salary of £800 per annum." It is understood one appointment is to be for Wakefield. It also says: " Sir George Grey is about to relinquish the leadership of his party."

All efforts to find any traces of the three Greek fishermen, who went out in a boat some days ago; were unavailing. The search parties bare come back. It appears the boat had a large quantity of pig iron as ballast.

The Position of the Servants of

Friendly Societies.

In the Supreme Court, Morton Quin was charged with embezzling £9 10s, the property of the Wellington District Court of Ancient Order of Foresters. The principal point that the counsel for the defence objected to was, there was no proof of the registration of the names of the trustees, and pointing out that the certificate of registration of the rules was signed by G. S. Cooper, Colonial Secretary, for the JBegistrar of Friendly Societies, instead of the Eegistrar himself. The Court held the objection fatal, and the Jury acquitted the prisoner. This is the third case of a similar character which has fallen through here lately. The Crown Prosecutor intimated his intention of sending in another bill to the Grand Jury charging Quin with larceny from a co-partnership, of which he was a member. A charge of this nature is now going on against Welsh, a secretary of the Hibernian Society, which does not pretend to be registered at all. In the Gisborne riot case, the Grand Jury threw tmt the bill, and make a presentment as to the hardship of sending from a distant place cases which should be dealt with on the spot.

A slight shock of earthquake was felt here this morning early.

The schooner Falcon, from Hobarton encountered terrible weather. The wheel was smashed by a heavy sea, and the cabin door burst in and the cabin flooded. The danger was so imminent at one period that a considerable quantity, of cargo wai thrown overboard.
