COTOTT' OGTOOXL. The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held yesterday afternoon. Present—The County Chairman, Crs Bagnail, Brown, Carpenter, Coutts, Deeble, Greenville and Thorburn. MISUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read over aud confirmed. OUTWARD CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence since last meeting was read over. WATEB VALVE. At the request of the secretary of the Thames Domestic Water Supply it was resolved to close the valve connecting the two supplies for the present. THE THBSTiK LEG. The Town Clerk wrote asking the Council to give tho promised guarantee that they would remove the water-race trestle on the Waiotahi road when called upon to do so-by the Borough Council. It was decided to siccede to the request. ■ KOAD METAL. The Town Clerk wrote asserting that the last coat of metal on Eolleston street at Borough boundary had been spread by the Borough and not by the* County. The Chairman stated that the metal referred to had been spread when a portion of the Kauaeranga Highway Board bad been merged into the Borough. The County Clerk was instructed to acquaint the Towu Clerk with this fact. HAUKAKI EOAD. Cr Bagnall presented a petition from residents of Totam road offering to subscribe £12 towards the converting of the Hauraki road into a cart road provided the Council subsidised the amount subscribed. Cr Bagnall moved that the work be proceeded with as soon as the £12 promised is paid to the Council. Cr Porter seconded. Carried. THE TAPU SQUABBLE. A letter was received from B. M. Hawkes, of Tapu, asking for an inve-ti-gation into Ihe charges made agaiust certain County officials connected with Hastings Hiding. Mr Carrbn, a- foreman of works, also wrote asking for an enquiry into the allegations made against him. He asked that Cr Deeble be not allowed to sit on any committee to investigate the matter. Keilder and Goonan, who bad signed a letter making charges against Mr Carron, also wrote stating that they found the charges made had no foundation. Cr Deeble spoke strongly on Carron's reference to himself. After some discussion tho correspondence was referred to the Investigation Committee. BOAD ME'J&L. It was decided to refuse the offer of James Connelly of a quantity of road metal. LAND SLIP. On the motion of Cr Bagnali it was resolved to instruct the Engineer to report as to the best means of repairing the damage caused by a land slip at Mr John Bull's residence, Parawai road, and to forward a copy of the letter to the Water Supply Committee, and ask them to contribute towards the cost. EOAD AT OHINEMUBI. Cr Porter pre?ented a petition from Mr Chambers of Ohinemuri asking the Council to lay off a road costing about £30. The road would open a mining and agricultural district. Mr Chambers had spent £150 on a tramway, and the road would benefit five agricultural settlers as well as Mr Chambers. Heferred to Surveyor to report on the utility of the work, and cost of same. IBIBHTOWK BOAD. Cr Coatts presented a petition from a number of residents of Irishtown urging the Council to make a road in this locality. Cts Coutts end Deeble spoke on the advisability making the road. Cr Greenville pointed oat that the road would be through the Borough of Thames. He did not think they could legally make a road in the Borough. The matter was finally .referred to the Board of Works. APPOINTMENT OP VALTTEK. The applications for the above office having been considered in Committee, Mr Bagnall moved and Mr Porter seconded that Mr Smith be appointed Valuer, being the lowest tenderer. Cr Greenville proposed, and Cr Deeble seconded that Mr Vernon be appointed Valuer. On the two names being pot to the meeting, 6 voted for Mr Smith, and 2 for Mr Yernon. Mr Smith was declared elected. PUKEPAEBOA BOAD. Mr D. Snodgrass, of Ohinemuri, wrote io the Council drawing attention to the defective construction of the ditch running alongside his land, also to the fact that the bridge had not yet been made, and thirdly that he had received j no compensation for fencing the road on , both sides. It was resolved to inform { Mr Snodgrass that compensation cannot j be given, and also that the other matters Jbad, been attended to. luck's all claim. The proprietor of this claim wrote, drawing attention to the bad state of the road leading up to the mine. Referred to Engineer with power to act. H. B. ABTHA. H. E. Artha wrote asking—(l) that the Waio-Karaka road near his premises be repaired, and (2), asking for the use of the waste water from the Waio-Karaka reservoir for domestic purposes. The first request was referred to the Board of Works and the second was agreed to. CHARITABLE BELIEF. A letter re two Ohinemuri residents, at present in. the Old Men's Home, was referred to the Charitable Aid Committee. CONTBACTOBS APPLICATION. The Council declined to give John MeWillia^ijs compensation for loss sustained in carrying out a contract on the Katikati road. KAEAKA EOAD. After some discussion it was decided to defer consideration of the matter of improving the Karaka road near the City of Manchester claim for the present. BEPOBTS. Thr reports of the different committees were read and adopted. Cr Porter, in seconding the adoption of the report of the 33oard"of Works, spoke strongly on the high compensation demanded by the settlers of the Kauaeranga Valley for the road. Cr Greenfield thought that Mr Stevens should not be blamed for asking for compensation for the road, as it took away some of the best of hia land in crop. He had offered another line of road for nothing. TVATEB SACE TUNNEL. A letter was rend from Mr P. Trainor and party notifying the Council that they had completed their contract for the Waio-Karaka water race tunnel. They bad lost by the contract and asked any
