Last night. The Rotomahana from Melbourne is at | the Heads 1 During September 644 persons arrived at the ports of Otago, and 135 persons left. The assessment on the stock and runs in the Provincial District of Otago for the year 1879-80, exclusive of InvercarKill land district, and the rents received under the Laud Act, 1877, amounted to £40,689 12s 2d. The customs revenue collected at port of Dunedin for the quarter ending September 30th was £92,011 6s 7d, and for the corresponding quarter of the previous year £105,885 9s lOd, Inhuman Conduct of a Husband. At the inquest yesterday on the body of Ann Smittt, tilled by Till :IJ'fcrtjaliueM' of her husband, the jury returned an open verdifet to the effect that deceased met her death by convulsions induced by a fracture of her right leg. The following rider was added to the verdict " The jury, while considering the fracture of deceased's legs was caused directly or indirectly by the act of James Smith, her i husband, yet consider that he conducted j himself towards her with groat inhumanity, when he must have known that she was in pain."
