This day. Newman against Hurst and "Wallis, M's.S.B. A Hint to Local Aspirants for fame. At the Resident Magistrates Court this morning, E. M. Machattie, agent for Dr Waliis during the recent election, was sued by Joseph Newman for the recovery of 40s, in respect of a breach of " The Corrupt Practices Prevention Act, 1858," by supplying refreshment to two electors, viz., Pavies and Campbell. Messrs Heaketh and Tyler for the plaintiff, Mr Cooper for the defendant. The defence is a denial of everything the prosecution is prepared to allege, and no witnesses have been subpoened. The first witness examined deposed that on the day Of the election, refreshments were supplied in the committee rooms of Hurst, Waliis, and Newman, the only distinction-being that Wallis ordered beer to the value of £2 lls, while Hirst and Newman contented themselves with providing sandwiches and coffee. The case is still proceeding.)
