Opinions on Sir George Grey's
Election for Christcnurch,
Certain scandals regarding the Native Department expenditure appear in this morning's Times in connection with which it is said Levin will ask for the production of the vouchers, if any, regarding these matters. It is stated that four lawyers out of five consulted by Eichardson regarding Sir George Grey's election gave their opinion that Grey cannot sit for Christchurch. It is reported as a matter of fact that certain leading members of the Liberal Eeform Association were empowered during the elections to send collect telegrams to Ministers on electioneering business and used to receive Government telegrams in return marked " Government Telegrams." Information on these mat- ! tars will also be asked for in Parliament, j A bad passage from England. The ship St. Leonard's has arrived from London after 109 day's passage. About, 60 passengers all T well. She left on 9th of June, and experienced a heavy gale on the 10th of August, two boats being washed out of the davits, and a third one smashed to pieces. A private telegram from Melbourne states that the arrival of the Sotomabana here caused a most lively interest. She is being visited by crowds of people. The fittings and appointments are bcjng made much of and admired. She leaves for Dunedin direct to-morrow.
