It now appears that the very exciting scare of calling out tho reserves is likely ,to prove a most expensive affair. The total cost of the movement is given as £610,294, and the number of men called out was 34,749. Had no mobilisation taken place the country would only have had to bear charges, in tba ordinary course, amounting to £84,658. The experiments with the celebrated Ucbatins guns for the defence of fortresses having turned out highly satisfactory, the Austrian Government has determined to replace the whole of the obsolete ordnance with which the fortresses- of-the. empire are armed by new steel bronze breechloading artillery of this system. The Mount Alexander Mail states : — " The Chinese gardeners of the district, finding the European population averse to their method of applying fertilisers to their vegetables, have in many cases discontinued the practice, and adopted the orthodox English plan." ■
