Saturday night. The Chance of another Seat for the Government.

The intending petitioner against the Kaiapoi election obtained a legal opinion this morning to the effect that the election not having been conducted upon the certificated roll is null and'void. The names of the Hons. J. Sheehan and Eiebardion, Mr Feldwick, and Mr J. S. White, of Oiioka, are already mentioned as probable candidates. Action of the Working Men. At a meeting of the unemployed in Cathedral Square a suggestion by one of the speakers that communications should be sent to the leading English, Irish, and Scotch newspapers warning working men of the risk they incurred by emigration to New Zealand during the present crisis, was received with warm approbation.

The Superintendent of Police received a telegram to-cUy from Inspector Pender atTimaru saying Mr Middleton, manager of the Benmore station, had wired to him from Duntroon that two men (names not given) had been drowned the previpui day in the Ohau river. Instructions were at once telegraphed to Sergeant .Burtonshaw, stationed at Albury, to proceed to the scene immediately.
