Cost of lighting the city with gas, is beginning to engage the attention of the City Council. It is highly probable the Corporation will construct gas works of its own.
Nothing further has been heard of the missing man John fiaughton. Ho is sixty years of age, and is now missing weeks. A stowaway from Napier to Wellington was this morning ordered to pay three pounds, or four weeks imprison* ment.
A rery influential deputation of citizens waited upon Col. Pesrce to-day to induce him to reconsider! his determination, not to stand for the Mayorality. Col. Pearce strongly adhered to his original determination, but the deputation urged the matter so strongly that he agreed to take further time to consiJer the matter, and will reply definitely ou Tuesday next.
