A Dunedin telegram informs U3 of the committal of Waters, the occupier of one of the buildings . burnt during the late fire, on a charge of murder. The fact that there are somo grounds for supposing that this unfortunate man wilfully set fire to his premises adds to the calamity.
The Bank of New Zealand will ship for Auckland to-morrow morning four boxes of gold containing 4463 ounces.

Mb Louis Ehbenfbied in our advertising columns announces kimself as a candidate for the suffrages of the electors in the forthcoming election. He professes Liberal opinions and believes in Sir George Grey or the leader of the Liberal party. If Mr Ehrenfried is successful we believe he will represent the interests of this constituency faithfully in Parliament.
• The following notice appears in the Government Gazette:-—" Whereas a person of the name of George Vennel, of New Brighton Koad, near Christchurch, in the provincial district of. Canterbury, has mysteriously disappeared, and there are rensons for supposing that he may have been murdered by some person or persous unknown, notice is hereby given that should the said George Venuel have been murdered, His Excellency the Governor will grant a free pardon to any person implicated in such murder, except the actual murderer, who shall give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the murderer or murderers. (Signed) Johk Sheehan."
The following appointments have been gazetted.:—W. P. James to be Marshal of the Vice-Admiralty Court of JNew Zealand; W. G. P. O'Callaghan to be Clerk of the Court at Onebunga ; F. N. KusseH to be Record Clerk in the Native Office; W. Baterie to be Clerk in the Keserves and Trust Commissioner's office ; James Mackay to be Special Commissioner to investigate any claims which may be made for the fulfilment of alleged pro raises of reserves or money for uatives in connection with the settled blocks of land on the West Coast, and Wason to be a cadet in the Survey Department. Also Special Kules under the regulation of Miner's Act, 1874.

The following item may be of interest to Wmbers' of our local brigades:—There are thirty-two brigades in the Colony, having 10 superintendents, 23 captains, 18 lieutenants, 54 foreman, and 18 other officers, with 617 men. The to al number of engines is 36 of which 32 are hand and 4 steam. Ihere are also 17 band pumps, 45 hose reels, and 18 hook and ladder curriages. The total length of ladders in use is lG2Gffc. Ofhose there is a total of 9066 ft leather, 24,304 canraa, and 2360 india-rubber. There are 38 stations, 33 of wood, and 3 of brick, of tho total value of £12,261. The total value of the plant is estimated at £15,080. It mny be noted that the Christchurch Brigade stnnds first in order of seniority, hating been established in 1860, Duaedin coming second iv 18(52, and Wellington Volunteer tfcicd m 1864.
