NELSON.

Last night.

A man named Patrick Kirwin who was recently committed for trial" for cattle stealing at MarLborough, but was liberated on bail, has committed an assault at the Kepper accommodation house, at the foot of the Maungatupu, on a man named Dryers. From information received the police were sent up to Dryers' where they found Kirwin much knocked about himself, armed with an old gun, and covered with blood. It appears Kirwin went to Dryers', and after asking for refreshment savagely assaulted the latter, and after disabling him burnt about £50 worth of goods. Kirwin was brought into town and remanded, but it has now transpired he is of unsound mind.
