DUNEDIN.

This day. At the inquiry into the origin of the fire at the Octagon a great number of witnesses were examined. No further light was thrown oh the origin. A man named Jolly, working on the Herald, who passed through the Octagon a quarter of an hour before the fire broke out, deposed to having noticed a light as of a candle being carried from one room to another. After hearing the evidence Inspector Mallard would not undertake the responsibility of allowing Waters, the Cafe* proprietor, to be at large that night. He is therefore in the lock-up, although not formally arrested. He made an appeal to the Coroner not to detain him at that late hour, when he could not get bail. The Coroner said, if buil were forthcoming, he could not take it.
