A jQung man named Geo. Brighton was arrested to-day for wrecking a dwelling bouse at Upper ffutt and stealing £15.
The steamer which went in search of the water-logged schooner Laurel, returned to port to-day without bating seen anything of her. Tbp following has been
received from Mr Hornby, ut Picton :— "Vessel seen lust night, Wednesday, north of Jackson's Head. Part of her snils sot, and she was apparantly drifting." A preliminary onquiry into circumstances was held this morning before the Collector of Customs. The captain was examined, but could give no evidence to show how the leak occurred. Tho annual meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association was held last night, when tho report showed a greater success than last year, and the Association had now a balance of £8. The, Premier, accompanied by the Hons. Macandrovr, Fisher, and Thomson, arrived to day. The steamer Australia with the outward London mails of August 14 left San Francisco on the Ist September, contract date, and the City of New York with the homeward New Zealand mails of August 19 arrived at 'Frisco on the 9th September, two days before contract date. A proclamation appears abolishing the R.M. district of Onehunga, and altering the boundaries of the district of Auckland. R. Brooking of Napier has been appointed a certificated accountant in Bankruptcy, and H. Kenrick Trust Commissioner for Poverty Bay District, and Fred Red ward, Fred Mortcnscn, Antone Thomeson, Ole Olsen and Alfred Lipman Levy, were appointed Wardens of the Norsewood Highway District, Waipawn, for the ensuing year, and George Hanson, Henry Smith, John O'Leary, Frederick Shugar, and Alfred Lipman Levy to be-Wardens of Orraondville Highway District Waipawa for the ensuing year. The notice of the proposed loan for Balclutha appears in the Gazette. Stephen Letham has been appointed J.P.; N. Mehan, H. R. B. Burt, and H. J. Munro to be interpreters under the Land Act; E. S. Maunsell to be Native Agent at Wairarapa; N. H. McDonald and H. R. Atkinson to be cadets in Survey Department.
