Electoral TO THE BUKGESSKS OF THE NOETH WARD. J ADIKS AND GENTLEMEN,— By Cir. *-^ oulur addressed to each of you 1 haVo already announced myself na a Onndidalo for a seat in the Council and solicited your votes. Being co woll known to moefc of you, I did i not ace the need for n more public declaration j of uiy principles, or for a Public Meeting. j But as it seems to be desired, I now add a i few more remarks. ; For fire years I took an active part in all the business that came before the Council, especially in mining matters. I supported that bargain, ■which has boen co much blamed, by which the Big Pump was kept going for two years, and would do so again under similar circumstance*. Also the freedom from Bating of Mining Property, while the Gold Duty continues to be charged. Economy with efficiency I believe in, but not in the cheap and nasty. If Elected, I would try to diminish rather tnan increase our Bye-laws, as I do not like to be over-goTerned, and though not in the Council during the past year, yet I promoted a successful opposition to the attempts made in this discretion. I trust the Free Library will receive a su(fi« eiency of votes to bring the Act into operation, and whether elected or not I shall help to bring this about, and would like the Mayor to call a public meeting for Friday sight for further ventilating of this important subject. I have«eked no promises, but if you do me tho* honour to place me at the Head of the Foil, I shall serve you with pleasure. * I remain, Your obedient servant, 1008 JAMES BENSHAW. ELECTORS OF NORTH WARD. n ENTLEMEN,— I take this opportunity of informing you that I am a CANDIDATE to represent you in tho Municipal Council of Thames. If elected I shall make it my business to visit your several districts at various periods, and in laying your wants before the Council use my best endeavors to see tho same attended to. I believe in all roads and water-works being made of a substantial and'durable nature, and am not in favour of any temporary works, which I consider to be a waste of money. It is well known that good water is essential to the preservation of health, and that the sanatory condition, of all the largely populated towns is dependent upon an abundant supply of the same. I shall endeavour to have the present water supply extended where it is most urgently required as soon as possible. I am in faror of a Free Library, and believe it would, if properly managed, bo of an inestimable value to the whole population, and would'advocate, in consection with the same institution, for the encouragement of arts and sciences, for the promotion of various branches of industries, within our midst, especially goldmining, and for better means for gold saving. I believe by tbat means we would be forming tbe nucleus of a School of Mines for the Thames, and that we would have the assistance of the Government in carrying out of the same. I believe in negotiating for a loan at a low rate of interest to pay overdrafts and to carry out; such works as are actually necessary within the Borough in an efficient and economical manner, and whilst representing you as Councillor of North Ward, will at the. samo time do my best in the interest of the whole Borough generally, and givo my best attention to any question which may hereafter arise. I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant, SAMUEL BAWDE^. TO THE THAMES ELECTORS. f*i ENTLEMEN,—In Iho event of Sib Geo. Geey or the Hon. J. Sheeban Beßign* ing their Seats, I shall CONTEST the Election upon terms agreed upon. W. BOWE.
