The Occult Art.
A good clairvoyance story was recently related to 01 by Mri Blank, of the Pumpkin Hotel. It appears that a fortnight ago, a Southern gentleman was stopping at the Pumpkin, and it became rumored that he was an adept in the occult arts of mesmerism, olairroyance, and that sort of thine, qa4 nearly all ike inmates of t|p h^se. h*riog. seen soaie of,
his experiments professed implicit belief in his power. Oae of the unbelievers was the worthy hostess, Mrs Blank herself, and to convince her of hie extraordinary accomplishments became apparently one of the chief ends of Mr Manner's (the clairvoyance man's) existence. "Look here, Mrs Blank," he taid one day, a fortnight ago, " I'll be at Wellington the week after next, and at six o'clock in the evening of the sth of September—make a note of it, please— 'your btrmaid* wilt come to you and say, • Mrs Blank, I feel Mr Mesmer workiag on me,' and then I think you'll admit my power." 'Mrs Blank thought it woaU be a satisfactory test so she assented. Mesmer went down South, and the stated fortnight elapsed. On the afternoon of the sth a,telegram came for jßo«aad-So, the barmaid, but owing to the defective caligraphy of the telegraph youth, or some other cause which doec not transpire, the young lady could make aothiag oat of it. So she took it to Mrs Blank, who read the following words:—" Mies Bo* and, So,—Remember at 0 o'clock te-aiffht. —Mesmer." The girl smiled, and Mrs Blank comprehended the. eUaatioa,at once. She says she never thought Met. mer could do it, and afterwards she arrived at the conclusion that all those ehurvoyance people are frauds.
