'[ 'i Beside tho door one atunmer day, •■' ■ - There aat a maiden, bright and gay, And fair, oa is the fairy May, That decked the fields aromd her. . f Softly she hummed a biithsome strain And glanced adown the grtssj.kne, Then tamed aud sowed her seam again -,*■,- With smilo and aigh comminsjled.' t - : ... " What are you thinking of, my child ? w, Her gentle mother said, and smiled; ' ' Then stood with anxious glance, yet mild, - Waiting her daughter's answer. | But she looked np with bright surprise, i A.nddrqpped,lter-4oveJy tell.talo eye*, | And answered—are sach answers wise ?— I " Nothing, dear Mother, nothing." |**• " • « ■ ■ Beside the fire, one winter night, There sat a maiden sad and white, With weary eyes from which tho light Seemed chased away for ever. "■.:':' "What ails the girl ?" tho father said, : : ; And kindly stroked the shining head; :Bnt she with smile whence joy hath fled, , ' ■ ' Answered, "Dear father, nothing.'* ,• .?■';■•.'•." '"'"■ " My life is passing by," she said, iThe years are fleeting o'er my head, jWith swift and sure though noiseless tread,,. : ■ Soon they will all be over.' Bnt when a child, with wondering eyes, f Asked her what grieved her, in surprise, She kissed his check and low replies, . . | '; "Nothing, deefcMldie, ftoMuur."
