Last night. The New Zealand Times withdraws its statement! against Mr Hutchison, the Mayor of Wellington, made on 26th ult., and states that no personal malice was intended. The Times also issued an apology. Hutchison and Levin addressed a crowded meeting of electors last night and each received a unanimous rote of confidence. The contest is causing great excitement, and is expected to be Terr close.

A despatch appears in the Gazette empowering the* Chevalier Daniel Ploos Van Amstelto act as Netherlands consulgeneral for the British Colonies in Australia; New Zealand, and Tasmania, to reside at Melbourne in the place of his brother, the late ChevalierJ.W. Ploos Van Amstel. The following appointments have been made: —P. Beaver, ■Mayor of Marton, ta> be a J.P. under the Municipal Corporation Act; John Coldan to be Sub-Lieutenant of No. 3 Inglewood Bangers.' The resignation of J. H. Lowe, of Chrischurch, of his appointment as Justice of the Peace, also of Hurry Kenrick, as B.M. for Poverty Bay. Major Stewart, officer in command of the Oamaru Militia and Volunteer districts, and Major Pitt, officer in command of the Nelson district, have resigned, also Lieutenant George Kit chin of the Auckland Engineers, and Lieutenant D.
