One Chief Killed and Eight Men Wounded.
It is reported on good authority that a desperate fight has taken place today
between the Maoris at Matarana, near Kaikohe, Say of Islands.
The fight was over the dividing lines of some blocks of land, and eight men were wounded and one chief killed. Pahs are being erected and further trouble is feared.

For Eden Mr Whitaker was nominated by Barton Ireland, seconded by McColl, and Tole was nominated by-Mr Thompson, seconded by Mr Jenkins. The show of tiands was—Tole 75, Whitaker 23.
At Cambridge Eewi proposed Major Te Wheoroas a candidate for Western Maori Electoral District. J. JKausfield proposed Hoani Taipua. Good order prevailed. The following Maori candidates are nominated for the Northern Electoral District :—Hone Mohi, Heta Te Hara, Hirini Taiwhanga, Hori Tawhito and Timoti Puhupi. I

W. J. Speight addressed the City East electors to-night, at tho Mechanics' Institute," and received a vote of eon. fidence. A telegram was read at the meeting from Sir George Grey, stating that he would arrive at Oneknnga in the forenoon of Wednesday, and would address the electors at the Theatre Royal in the evening.
At a meeting of the Acclimatisation Society, the Secretary announced that a shipment of brown trout had arrived from Christchurch, 2000 of 3200 ia good condition.
