Electoral MREOWE AND THIS THAMES RAILWAY. nnilE following extract from the Han- "^ sard report of the debate on the Railway Map Enquiry Mr Rowje's remarks upon the question : — " Mr Eowb.—l wfts ratber anxious that fotne occasion should ariae on which I should hare an opportunity of stating what I know in connection with this matter. I moy say that during the last session of Parliament, in conjunction with soveral parties referred to to-day, I took pome steps in connection with t; is railway, and whatever confusion or raistako may hare arisen since that time, I am confident in my own mind that all the parties concerned were fully persuaded that the railway was to bo from Grahnmetown to Waikato. I am perfectly sure that the Premier, the Minister for Public Works, and the Native Minister, so understood it \ and I am sure that I left Wellington with the full impreuion that that was to be the case ; and I am bound to say, knowing what I know, that there has been no intentional deception whatever—that what has been done was doss in entire accordance with the understanding that existed at the latter end of last session. I am sure the House will cot accuse me of favoring the preterit Ministry very much, hut I felt from the Tery commencement that Ministers had not attempted any deception, and I am sure that whatever Ministry gets into power must carry out the railway they hare commenced. To stop at Te Ar»ba would be so much money wasted, for the line would be neither beneficial to the people of the district nor profit* able to the Government. I am bound to say so much. I will not enter into the whole particulars of the matter. I merely wish the House to recognize that the positive understanding was that the railway was to go from Hamilton to Grahamstown." 851
