AUCKLAND.

-: This day.

Bobert iCasheU, a surveyor of Ohinemuri, affords the following explanation of the outrage :-—Six weeks ago he was employed with a party surveying the olock, where the outrage is supposed to have taken place. This block has not passed through the Court, ancl .his party were - surveying for tne Ngatibako, the supposed , prepetratore of ; present outrage,, and who had made; application to the court. Theire^are very few of'the tribe, but they are a very turbulent lot. They prevented the snagging of the the river some .time ago, and fired over the heads; of Messrs" Mackay, Creagb, Cashell and others when Mackay was getting the Waihou block ready for the Government survey. On that occasion it was stopped for a Bhort time, but afterwards completed, Mackay arranging amicably. Another tribe, the Ngatikoes, had taken advances on the land from the Government, and Bayldon's survey party were preparing it for that tribe, who had also applied to the Court. They had asked Cashell to survey the block, but having already done part for rival claimants he would not undertake it, and hence Bayldon and Crump" were applied to. The tribe is very small and isolated, but claimed several pieces in the hist Court, but gained nothing, and henoe they hive been very discontented. 4
