THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 1879.

The miserable spirit exhibited at the ■meeting on Saturday evening:, certainly is a new phase in the character of the people of the Thames. We liave heard them hiss at and make fun of a man who, after acting contrary to their desires, has the temerity to stand before them ; but never in the previous ennals of the place can we find a single, instance of. a Thames audience condemning unheard a man, no matter how grave were his sins of omission or commission. Some few amongst the large crowd present, although bitter opponents of Mr Howe, were English enough to endeavor to obtain a hearing for him, but their; efforts were of no avail. There appeared some grounds for the statement made that the disturbance had pre-arranged, as whenever a slight lull occurred the same voices were heard again and again commencing the clamour. The demonstration was of course intended injure Mr Howe's candidature, but we think, if anything, it will have the very opposite effect, as nothing so conduces to bind a party together and make them determined to obtain then; ends than oppression. If Mr Eowe had been allowed to say' all he he had to say, and permitted to answer the questions put to him, a vote of "no confidence" might have been passed, and everyone would have been, satisfied, but we cannot see that it could be satisfaction to anyone the behaviour of the meeting oh Saturday. By the manifest absence of the spirit of .fair play, we kr.e certain Mr Eowe will gain not a few votes which would not. have been the case had he been allowed to proceed with his address.
