THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, AUGUST 16, 1879.

Fbom our telegrams and other sources ol information it would appear that the re

presentations of our delegates of the wants of this district have received attention at the hands of the Government

notwithstanding the state of political turmoil now the order of the day in the metropolis. The grand object of the mis-

: sion of the Mayor and County Chairman was money hunting,' and both have been fairly successful. The monies promised the Borough on various accounts are being paid, and the votes of last session for C6unty works have passed the Treasury. In the case of the County the works were done, the Bank finding the'money, so vouchers had only to be presented and the amounts were paid. The Borough's position was different. In making bis demands,

the Mayor had no votes of the House to look for, but only the promises of ministers of sums on account of Orphans' Home, for repair of roads, and the arrears of gold duty and goldfields revenue due to the municipality. Fortunately fot us all the indebtedness of the Borough is comparatively light, for at the present time, with all the willingness of Ministers to assist the Thames" in obtaining what is justly its due, they are not in a position to wipe put the overdraft. On .i previous occasion, when a paternal Government stepped in and

liquidated the indebtedness of the Borough, the overdraft; was included amongst the. provincial -liabilities. The position of the Grey party, the notoriety of the Thames and Waikato railway, together with the knowledge that all their actions are closely -watched, especially those affecting the Thames, renders the Ministry cautious not to give cause for censure by the new parliament. ■.••>■■■••. -.•. ■- ■■:
