THE COMING ELECTION.
(To the. Editor of the Erening J3fcar.j :
Sib,—"Look at this picture and look on that,'^ that is look at the advertisement in this morning's Advertiser and the one in the Evening Star, emanating from one and the same person, headed " Forthcoming Election," in which you will perceive that the Borough Council has been made a Committee Room for political flunkeys to air themselves in, and the ratepayers made the stalking horse on whiciith.ej,;would ride, or disseminate their views. Evidently they made a mistake, and the Redoubtable champion of all that's mysterious and peculiarly delicate to handle, had> to bo- called in' to rectify: the error," my friend, Mac." It is very
strange, but if ever any one gets into a difficulty, if they can only get hold of him the thing is right, and the alteration was all6wed to be made, and the meeting is/now called by plain L. Elirenfried, minus the "Acting-Mayor." If the burgesses do not fully appreciate such disinterestedness on their behalf on •Saturday night by rejecting such premature officiousness on the part of the would-be leaders of the Thames electorate, they deserve to be left to flounder in the mire of political misrepresentation and neglect, deserted by one party and forsaken ,by the other. Sir , George Grey has already announced his intention to stand for Christchurch,(and the g-reatest victory he could win w6ul& be for him to be returned for the centre of sriatocratio" squatterdoni—a. triumph of representation on the basisi of population versus rottenboroughs—and the Hon. Johnny may yet 'have to fall back on Rodney, where they can poll bullocks and unknown Maoris, and an electoral roll stuffed for the purpose of swamping the European vote. My word to you is worthy burgesses,, "do not commit yourselves to.any particular course till you are quite satisfied that the horse you are about to. ride iqoa'frbuck."—l am, &c., , , .
