The Opposition seem determined to contest every proposal of the Government, and take opportunities to assail Sir George Grey, personally, and taunt his party as being without the confidence of the colony. Sir George Grey is acknowledged to be too clever for the Opposition, so every action is watched.
The Opposition whips are trying to get Thames people to support their party, and it is rumored with some success, pointing out that the next Government—if two Grey members are returned—will do nothing for the district.
The Opposition are likely' to subscribe funds to contest one seat.
Bets are made that Sir George Grey will never be in office next Parliament.
Much dissatisfaction is expressed at the treatment the Government are receiving, but the great belief is that Sir George Grey will surmount all difficulties.* -
No dissolution this week. Sir George Grey will not visit the Thames. The Hon. J. Sheehan will."
Sir George Grey proposes to stump the South Island.
