REPLY TO BIRD'S EYE.

(To the Editor of the EroninK Sfcai-.) " Siß,~Having; observed a letter in last night's paper signed " Bird's Eye." allow me to state ithat the Caledonian ladderway is the same that has been in use since the shaft was first sank, without accident. "Bird'fi.J£y 4 e>" is so far cbrrect, that I have long ago thrown up all responsibili!y in relation to the ladder-way, by posting notices denying its use, warning men that it was unsafe,*at^the same time pointing out another and better way out of the mines. If it were possible to fix proper ladder Stages and work the cages* it^ would hare been done; but there is riot room in the shaft for a stage which would prevent a man falling through. Such a stage should be behind tbe^' ladder, i.bi, the stage be behind one's:back—if he fell out of the ladder. This is impossible in the Caledonian shaft, if the cages are to work. " Bifjd^Bj^Vwill please notice that we are pleased' >- to lowfer arid fai sei free of cost, all the men belonging to neighboring ipiaes when the engine is at work, but tihat we regard him ; as: trespassing on the ladder-way. Our own men are notified not to use it, as it is unsafe. } HU -.'viow;.i .•;•■■ ■'■•''■= ■■■■:?rTHos.-:JAMEis.'; 2nd; 1879; ;
